Cypress Terrain can be used for a wide variety of animals because it can be used dry, slightly humid or even wet. It is especially useful for humidity loving animals. Use the Komodo Humidity Gauge in conjunction with a Komodo Spray Bottle to measure and increase the moisture levels as required.
CHOOSING THE CORRECT SUBSTRATE
It is important to always research the requirements of your animal prior to setting up the habitat. Learning more about the ecology of the wild environment will give you a greater understanding and appreciation for your reptile or amphibian. Discover whether your pet comes from a desert, savannah, temperate or rain forest environment to help you choose the correct substrate. Factors to consider include how humid or dry the substrate needs to remain and whether the animal will enjoy a deep substrate for burrowing. The chart provided illustrates recommendations from experienced herptoculturists and is not designed to be exclusive advice. No matter where your reptile occurs, most species will require at least a small area of humidity to aid in shedding and to help prevent dehydration. For snakes and some lizards this is often best accomplished by providing a suitable hide packed with Komodo Woodland Moss. Many tortoises will appreciate a humid area of substrate at the cooler end of the habitat. For Horsfield’s tortoises and Uromastyx lizards it is important that the chosen substrate remains bone dry. You can often improve the appearance of a habitat and enrich the environment for the occupant by mixing and matching a variety of substrates at different positions within the
vivarium. All Komodo substrates have proved safe if a small amount is inadvertently consumed. However, using a suitable size Habitat Bowl for feeding will help to reduce accidental ingestion of the substrate plus keep food clean and easy to locate. We recommend that all habitats are stripped, thoroughly cleaned and then replenished with fresh substrate at least twice a year and more often as required.
